What is dinner time like in your house? Lately mine has been an uphill battle, with my son who has become a picky eater! I dread dinner as it often turns into a battle between Brady and myself, as half the time he refuses to eat what he's given.

Depending on where you might be located, your weather will of course vary to mine. That being said, here in Ontario, the weather has been beautiful!!! This of course leads to my question, has Spring really sprung?

Dr. Oz Was Right!
Dr. Oz has said many times on his popular show that elastic waist pants are not your friend, it turns out he was right! Whenever he said this I would sort of think, "Seriously, how could you not tell if you were gaining weight!" Unfortunately, I now know the answer to that question first-hand.

Snowy Weekend
This past weekend we were finally given a taste of winter. I'm not referring to the bitter wind chills either. Playtime in the snow has been down to a minimum this season and it's been difficult to occupy the twins. Playing outside with the twins just isn't the same when there's no snow and it's freezing temperatures outside.

Potty training continues to be going well here, but life just continues to get busier :)
What can I say though, I still remain busy, busy, busy! No, I am not going on another vacation, although who wouldn't want another one of those.

Potty Training or Bribery?!?
As you know, we're on our second attempt of potty training the twins and so far I think we're doing okay. Of course on the days where I feel super frustrated with the task I surf the web looking for answers and can't believe the amount of bribery I'm thinking this might take.

Sippy Cup Hide and Seek
Lately it seems I have been playing a daily game of hide and seek with the twins sippy cups. Let me tell you it has been frustrating. I didn't think it was possible to lose at hide and seek against a sippy cup. However, I can assure you it is. One night last week I hunted high and low in this place in search of one missing sippy cup. I went to bed that night thinking I would have to buy a new one the following day.
Sure enough, the next morning as I'm getting the twins breakfast ready, in walks Laura drinking from that very sippy cup. The sippy cup, who just the night before had beat me in a game of sippy cup hide and seek. The night before I had asked both Brady and Laura several times if they knew where the cup was. They laughed and danced, they even pretended to look for the cup. Well, I hope they were looking for it. If not, then they were mocking my loss of the game of hide and seek with the sippy cup.
Tonight before we put the twins to bed my husband decided to join in on the game. Together we looked everywhere for this sippy cup. Especially since it was just purchased today. Laura and Brady standing around, helping as always. I could tell my husband was starting to feel the same frustration I had felt the week before. Sure enough he found it on the couch, in front of his face. This has happened to me on countless occasions. The more I hunt for missing sippy cups, the more frustrated I get too.
I am determined to come up with a device for these sippy cups. A pager perhaps, so I won't lose at sippy cup hide and seek again.

Athlete I Am Not
Wow! Today was just one of those days. You know those days, when you just can't seem to open your eyes. You fight with yourself to get up and out of bed. Needless to say that's how I felt this morning. Laura and Brady played happily in their cribs for awhile so rather then get my butt out of bed, I opted for an extra 15 minutes or so sleep.
Unfortunately it didn't help much. I think it's just been too many late nights in a row in this house. Two coffees and a bowl of cereal later and I just couldn't seem to get motivated. Poor hubby, he had to put up with lazy, not-so-friendly wife. He's met her before, but he doesn't really like her. I know my husband doesn't care if I have a lazy day but not-so-friendly wife is something he doesn't like dealing with.
So, by lunch, this not-so-friendly wife decided running would be a good way to get herself both motivated and out of her crazy state. Well, I would like to start off by making it quite clear that there is a HUGE difference between running with a Wii remote and running outside. Yep, I've been running with that remote for a long time now. Thinking the whole time that I was an athlete.
Well today I realized an athlete, is something I am not. I would say I managed to jog for about half and power walk the rest of the 2.5 km run I had mapped out for myself. What was I thinking, running on the spot in the living room for 20 minutes doesn't constitute to mapping out a run quite that far. Once home, it took me nearly an hour to cool down. My chest felt like it was caving in. Now hours later, the longer I sit here the more I am stiffening up.
Needless to say not-so-friendly wife was left behind on the run. This made for a much more enjoyable afternoon. We'll have to see how I feel tomorrow, but this Mommy has a new mission. I plan on being able to run those 2.5 km's without dropping down to a power walk.
Let the training begin.

Tumbling Toddlers
As Laura and Brady get older, they're moving faster than their little feet will let them go. This is leading to tons of tumbles and tears in this house.
I've read baby proofing your home is important with toddlers, but I think you can only "baby proof" your home so much. Yes we've moved chemicals, breakables, sharp objects, etc. out of their reach. However, just last night Laura was sitting in on the couch, she swung herself backwards and hit her head off the arm of the couch, which happens to be wood. I am sure baby proofing your home, doesn't mean purchasing new padded furniture, padding your walls, etc., some falls are just unavoidable.
Because falls are inevitable and occurring on a daily basis in this house. I've compiled a small checklist of symptoms I watch the twins for after a fall.
Keep in mind I continue to watch the twins for at least 24 to 48 hours depending on the severity of the fall.
Concussions can be difficult to detect in toddlers because they can't communicate as well as an older child or adult. The above is only a small checklist, there are several other symptoms which can be due to a concussion. If you are unsure if your child has a concussion call your family doctor or proceed to your local emergency department or walk-in clinic.

The Mystery Rash
Recently our house, well Laura in particular, was plagued with what we were calling a mystery rash. Literally here today, gone tomorrow. Better yet, here for 20 minutes, gone for 20 hours. I first noticed this mystery rash while giving her bath. It was almost as though she had what looked like a couple of welts or swollen bites on her arms.
Because of how fast the mystery rash seemed to spread although it stayed only on her arms, I took her to the hospital. If I had noticed the rash only 15 minutes earlier we could have gone to the walk-in clinic instead. I suppose this could be called, first time parent syndrome as the rash didn't seem to be bothering her, no fever, really no change in her at all. However, my husband and I wanted to be sure she was okay.
Of course by the time we made it to the hospital and registered her, the rash was gone. Considering the time was nearing 10 p.m. and we were looking at a minimum of six hours before she was going to be seen by a doctor, we left. Both Laura and Brady had a family doctor's appointment scheduled for the following morning, so I figured I would just mention it to him then. As well, my husband and I monitored her closely through the night.
The family doctor said she probably had an allergic reaction but as to what, he had no idea. He told us to watch her closely in case it happened again. That day she was fine, no rash. The third day was another story. Off and on throughout the day these same welt-like bumps were showing up on her arms. My husband and I racked our brains trying to figure out what could be causing this mystery rash.
We narrowed it down to two possibilities. A different cereal she had been eating through the week or the change in laundry detergent. We've never had a specific brand of detergent that we used, as we've always just bought whatever was on sale. Go figure the week the "name-brand" detergent is on sale, I buy it, and....... hello rash.
Needless to say all that laundry I was complaining about, well at least a quarter of it had to be re-washed. Knock on wood though, we must have been right. Since we went back to the cheaper detergent, the mystery rash is gone. The laundry on the other hand, it's still there.

18 Month Needles can be Stinky
Today Laura and Bradys got their 18 month needles. We've been lucky as they are usually pretty good with their needles. Crying initially and carrying on through the day as if they had never had them. Again we were lucky as today was no different.
The day was fantastic, beginning with stinky diapers and a great breakfast. This has become a typical morning in this house. Our goal was to be out of the house by 9:00 am, we pulled out of the driveway at 9:10 am. I think leaving only ten minutes later then scheduled isn't bad at all. My husband did everything he could to get us out the door by 9 am, but it was Mommy that was running behind today. Regardless of my procrastination this morning, we still made it to the doctor's office on time.
As always when we got to the doctor's office Laura and Brady were the entertainment for everyone. They have a unique way of making friends everywhere they go. And like anyone else, they enjoy the special attention their new friends give them. Twice during all of her cuteness at the office Laura managed to poop, making the stinky diaper count in this house up to 4 before lunch.
They both cried at the poke of the needles but were fine once they we left the office. We decided to take advantage of Daddy's having the day off work and go to the mall for a little window shopping. Because they've been so good in the past we knew they'd be fine after their needles, so off we went. They were excited when we got to the mall. There is a double fire truck cart they enjoy riding in.
During our adventure at the mall I even managed to talk Daddy into going to the Zeller's Diner Restaurant for lunch. This is a big step as he's been nervous about taking Laura and Brady into a sit down restaurant. I've only been asking him to for months. With it being so close to lunch time though, my idea won him over and off we went. Laura and Brady we as good as gold and spoiled rotten. The waitress even gave them free smartie cookies for dessert. This after Daddy had already treated them to their first drink of chocolate milk.
Once finished eating we continued to wander the mall for a little while longer and then headed home. Laura and Brady fell asleep on the way home and went straight to their cribs for their naps. They were quite tuckered out from their adventurous morning. Thankfully lunch and naps were a good break from the stink however, it they both woke up with stinky diapers. That's where I stopped counting.
I'm not sure if the stinky diapers were payback for the needles or not.But poop and needles aside, it was a great day!

Best Friends From the Start
Do you remember when you met your first best friend?
Imagine what it would have been like to spend each and every day with that person. Not having to worry about your parents letting you have a sleep over or not because you lived together. Watching Brady and Laura today made me think about how truly lucky they are to have each other.
From the very beginning, they have had each other. Growing together in my belly. Experiencing life outside the womb together as they shared their first few hours together in an incubator. Coming home together. Crawling, talking, and walking together. Most of their firsts have been together.
There's nothing quite like the connection twins have together. There are several times during the day when they're not playing together. One may be in their bedroom and one in the kitchen, however they still periodically check on one another. I think it's amazing. If Brady does something new for the first time Laura will clap for him and vice versa.
When they were babies if one cried so did the other one. I know this is natural for a lot of babies, but they usually only cried for each other when the cries were genuine. For example, Brady was quite concerned about Laura's cries when she was gassy and in pain. However when she had and still has the days where she cries without reason, he doesn't cry.
I know as they grow older they are going to fight and argue, as all siblings do. I believe though they will continue to have a strong connection. A connection that hopefully no fight or argument will ever be able to break.
Today they were running up and down the hallway chasing each other, over and over again, giggling. Is there a sound better than that? A sound better than a child laughing, especially when it's your child with their best friend.

My Son the Veterinarian
![]() |
| Image: Ashley Cox / FreeDigitalPhotos.net |
I can't help but think Brady is going to become a veterinarian. I know what you're thinking. He's only 18 months old, he barely knows what animals are. How can you think he's going to be a vet. This boy is all about animals.
This past fall, Brady's uncle won him a stuffed toy dog on a leash from a local fair. Immediately the famous words, "dog, dog, dog. Woof, woof, woof". He went crazy over it. Brady usually walks this stuffed toy dog at least once a day. Not to mention the fights he has had with his sister over it. Dogs in general. Over the last few months Brady and Laura have accumulated quite a few stuffed toy dogs. Out of all of their stuffed animals the dogs are the ones he plays with the most.
For example, Zhu Zhu pets . A few of his cousins had them at Christmas and he fell in love with them. In fact we surprised him with his own Zhu Zhu pet shortly after and he was jumping with excitement. Just this past weekend he picked out a Zhu Zhu puppy when was at Toys R' Us with his Daddy.
Bambi commercials catch his eye to the point that he stops whatever it is he is doing, just to watch it. The dog Andrew in Mary Poppins gets him saying "dog, dog, dog. Woof, woof, woof". He has wooden puzzles of dogs and farm animals that he plays with all of the time. A rocking horse that he feeds plastic food too.
Laura likes the horse and plays with puzzles. She walks the stuffed toy dog sometimes, and every once in awhile she will play with the Zhu Zhu pets. But not the same way as Brady plays with them. She is bored of them quicker. She's rather be building with her mega blocks, cooking in her kitchen or watching her Mary Poppins.
Whatever he does decide to do when he grows up, I know he will do it great. Okay now that's something every Mom says. I also know that even if he's not a veterinarian, he will at least have a dog of his own and not a just a stuffed toy dog.

2 Toys 1 Day
It's not often Laura and Brady get brand new toys from their Daddy and I, unless of course it's a special occasion. We don't want them to take our gifts for granted and lets face it Daddy works as much as he does for a reason. It's also not often that Daddy has the opportunity to take Laura and Brady out by himself. With his crazy work schedule it's not always easy for them to get time together alone. Today on the other hand was their lucky day. Daddy offered Mommy some time to focus on writing, while he took the twins out for a bit.
Daddy decided to take them Toys R' Us with a gift card they had from Christmas. From what I gather Daddy and Brady had an excellent time. Laura on the other hand, she was scared of the toy her brother had picked out and apparently started screaming at the top of her lungs. For all you parents out there who have been in a situation similar to this, you know how he felt. For anyone who hasn't experienced such joy, you know what you are thinking when seeing a child freak out in a store.
Poor Daddy!
Unfortunately their trip to the store wasn't as long as Daddy said he wanted it to be, but he said he still enjoyed himself, Laura's freak out aside. Brady ended up picking out one of the new zhu zhu puppies. They're great pets, you don't have to feed them, walk them, etc. I know they're not recommended for children under the age of three however we watch the twins closely when they play with them. Laura picked out Olivia Ball Gown pig.
After Brady's haircut his Nanny insisted she buy him and his sister yet another toy at Walmart. This time Brady picked out a small stuffed Winnie the pooh. His Daddy tried to talk him into picking out wrestlers, but no such luck. It was Winnie the Pooh that came home with us.
For the twins today it was a great day! 2 Toys - 1 Day!!!

2nd Haircut What an Adventure
While at Wal-Mart today we decided to get Brady a haircut. Wow, what and adventure or wait! Did I say adventure? I meant to say mistake! The twins didn't have their nap today so trying to sit Brady in a chair with a stranger taking scissors to his head was definitely not a good idea.
As soon as I sat him down in the hairdresser's chair, the waterworks began. The hairdresser suggested I sit in the chair, he was okay until she tried to put the cape on me. I ended up holding him in my arms on my hip, with no capes to catch the hair. We had tried putting the capes on while we were standing and sure enough he freaked. Needless to say we both ended up covered in hair. I had told the hairdresser that with the twins I had been covered in a lot worse. Poop!
The haircut continued, with every spray of the water bottle his screams got louder. I looked at my husband. There wasn't much we could do, his hair needed to be cut. And so she continued to cut, continued to spray. I'm not quite sure how long the haircut took but I can assure for me it felt like forever.
Luckily I noticed the hairdresser's cape she was originally going to put on him was covered in animals. Thank you, monkey! You helped to calm him, without the animals he probably would have screamed non-stop.
There was a part of me that couldn't blame to poor kid for being a little scared. There were moments when the hairdresser made me nervous. She wasn't the greatest hairdresser for children. The haircut itself turned out not too bad though. The price, I suppose was reasonable. It was $11.95. We managed to get 10% off though because the hairdresser pretended it was Brady's first haircut, wink, wink. Her idea as when she asked me I was honest and said no it was his 2nd. She smiled and she would give us the 10% off.
Believe it or not, Laura didn't freak out while Billy was cried. Most importantly Brady got his haircut, so it wasn't a mistake. It was however, an adventure!

Twins 1st Attempt at Tobogganing
Thus far, the twins haven't had a lot of encounters with snow. They've come out with me a couple of times during the wretched task of snow shoveling, but other then that, they've been looking at it from the warmth of the house. Their first encounter with snow was funny, they more or less didn't move. Brady in particular, I believe he thinks once his feet are buried in the snow he's unable to move.
I have tried to play with them in the snow. Throwing it up in the air, making snow angels, etc. but they have continued to look at me like I am crazy. I'm sure have looked a little funny but I really want them to enjoy being outside all year round, not just the warmer months. At one point they ate the snow, no it was not yellow, I checked first. And to date I think that was probably what they enjoyed most, eating it. Can't blame them, I know I've ate snow once or twice. I don't remember eating any yellow snow, but it probably happened.
I figured what the twins needed was some time outside playing with other children. Seeing that Mommy isn't the only one who makes snow angels. To let Brady know that children try hard enough they can walk through snow. This being said, there wasn't a chance I could turn down a tobogganing invite from their Auntie Jennifer and some of her children. I had assumed they would love it, especially since playing with their cousins is one of their favourite things to do.
So this past weekend my husband and I bundled up Brady and Laura and off we went to experience their first rush of racing down a hill on a toboggan. Okay they didn't necessarily race down the hill, they are only 17 months old, but they did go down it. For safety reasons, we started a little more than half way down the hill. Laura was with her Auntie Jennifer and Brady was with me, their father waited anxiously at the bottom of the hill in case of any crashes. Down we went, Brady didn't make a sound the whole way down. I didn't hear anything from Laura and Auntie Jennifer's toboggan either, that is until they reached the bottom.
Sure enough once we reached the bottom, Laura let out the strangest cry. It was a cry/laugh mix. I'm sure every parent has heard it before, when their child can't seem to make up their mind, are they happy or not? I believe this is just what happened to Laura, that combined with her being a little tired. We didn't make her go down again. Brady, on the other hand went down again, but he wasn't much for it the second the time.
Needless to say I enjoyed the tobogganing trip with Auntie Jennifer and her girls. My plan of getting the twins to enjoy snow..... well we'll have to see next time they go out. For now we can say they have tobogganed, whether or not they enjoyed it, well ......... Mommy did.
