Feeding a Picky Eater

What is dinner time like in your house? Lately mine has been an uphill battle, with my son who has become a picky eater! I dread dinner as it often turns into a battle between Brady and myself, as half the time he refuses to eat what he's given.

Being raised in a household where you ate what you were given, I have no intentions of making separate meals in this house to appease everyone. Therefore, it's eat what is on your plate. Keep in mind spicy foods or meals that are new I don't push him to eat. Mashed potatoes, spaghetti, etc. are all meals in which I know he loves which is why I become so frustrated.

There have been several night's where his sister has finished her dinner and he sits there refusing to eat while she enjoys her dessert. If this sounds familiar, be sure to pop over on Friday for Freelance Writing Hints second post. This one focusing on what to do when feeding a picky eater.

  1. my daughter is 22 now and still eats very little variety. She is growing twins at the moment and they are healthy, she is healthy, so don't worry, if he is eating at all he is getting nutrients, and if you think he is missing out a childrens multivitamin can't hurt :)

  2. The FDA may not approve of my idea, but I think it really works seriously. I'm not a mom, I got this idea from my brother and sis-in-law they have 2 very happy, healthy little boys who are active in sports. I admit, they eat a lot of junk, those 2 can go through a bag of potato chips in like it seems 10 minutes. They're like little garbage disposals and the oldest is so skinny, but has washboard abs at just 11 years old. I think that's because he's active, mom and dad make them go outside and play and he plays football, basketball and baseball, so they get plenty of exercise. Anyway, long story short. The way I look at it, you can't force a child to eat anything and really in a way you shouldn't. I know me as an adult would not want to be forced to eat something I know I don't like such as tomatos or mashed potatos. It's a texture thing and it might be a texture thing for your son.

Does your son like cereal? Fruit? My brother and sis-in-law let their kids eat cereal for dinner, and sometimes they'll eat fruit with it too. I do the same thing as an adult, I love breakfast for dinner! Anyway, those boys eat more cereal than any kid I know I think, lol. The way they look at it is at least they are eating something.

You would still want to have him take a few bites of whatever dinner you make. They introduce new foods to them all the time and then maybe after a year they'll have them try foods they didn't like before, because your taste changes as you get older. A lot of the foods I hated as a kid, I love now. They just have them take a few bites off of their plate.

It's funny, the oldest nephew who is 11 hates mashed potatos, has always hated them since he was about 1, he gags on them literally. Yet, he loves french fries and potato chips. He also claims to hate cheese, but he loves Kraft Mac N Cheese and pizza. A lot of kids are like that though, if stuff is really cheesy.

The youngest actually loves a lot of foods. He loves Lobster, shrimp, chicken cordon bleu (I probably spelled that incorrectly)sour kraut, Chinese food, hot dogs and he loves fruit!

So I don't know it works for them, might be something to consider.
